IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has denied allegations circulating online claiming that Chinese characters had been installed alongside the iconic Ipoh sign on the hillside near Jalan Kuala Kangsar here.
Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah confirmed that the image, uploaded and circulated in a Facebook group “Manjoi Manjoi Ajerr”, is fake and is believed to have been manipulated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology or digital editing techniques.
He explained that the iconic Ipoh sign is currently undergoing inspection, repair and restoration works.
“The sign was safely dismantled on July 15 to facilitate a comprehensive inspection of its structure and physical condition.
“The measure was taken to ensure that the iconic landmark remains in good condition, safe and well maintained as one of the city’s landmarks and symbols of pride.
“The reinstallation of the sign is expected to be carried out in stages from Aug 4 to Aug 6, subject to weather conditions and the smooth progress of work at the site,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 22)
Zamakhshari said as such, any image showing other words or characters installed alongside the Ipoh sign at the location is false, misleading and does not reflect the actual situation.
He said dissemination of the manipulated image coupled with false claims is an irresponsible act that could create misunderstanding, anxiety and confusion among the public.
“The content also contains elements of defamation and has the potential to damage the image, harmony and reputation of Ipoh.
“The public must not easily believe, comment on, share or circulate any information that has not been verified.
“We advise the public to verify information through MBI’s official channels before reacting to or sharing any content on social media,” he said.
He added that the council also takes a serious view of the misuse of AI technology or digital editing to produce false content that could incite tension, hatred and negative perceptions among the public.
He said MBI is looking into the matter and will not hesitate to take appropriate action, including lodging reports with the relevant authorities against any individual or party involved in creating and disseminating the fake content.
“The public is urged to play its part in curbing the spread of fake news by adhering to the principle, 'If unsure, don’t share'.," said Zamakhshari.
