Body of Malaysian who fell while climbing Indonesia's Mt Rinjani still on mountain


PETALING JAYA: The body of a Malaysian who died in a fall while climbing Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia has not been retrieved by rescuers yet.

According to Sinar Harian, search and rescue operations are still in progress, carried out by various agencies involving dozens from the Mataram National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), medical teams and the East Lombok Search and Rescue (SAR) unit.

The victim, Rennie Abdul Ghani, 57, is also the brother of Malaysian actor Riezman Khuzaimi.

Riezman, 55, said their family is waiting for more information from Indonesian authorities "Thank you to all those who prayed for my brother-in-law," he commented on a Facebook post on the Hiking And Recreation Around Malaysia account on Sunday (May 4).

In another media portal, the deceased's sister who is known only as Yana said their family was informed of his death around 8pm Saturday night (May 3).

Rennie is reported to have fallen at 1pm Malaysian time.

She said the area where her brother fell appears to be hard to reach.

She added that Rennie's son was in Medan and would go to Lombok and wait for the body to be brought back.

On Saturday, it was reported that a Malaysian climber had fallen off the Toren route on Mount Rinjani.

Search and rescue operations are being carried out by various agencies involving dozens of members from the Mataram National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), medical teams and the East Lombok Search and Rescue (SAR) unit.

Gunung Rinjani National Park said Rennie, who was among a group of 23 climbers, fell in the Banyu Urip area. He began the climb via the Sembalun route on May 1.
