KOTA KINABALU: Internal tensions have surfaced within the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, following remarks from United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia suggesting the party may contest the upcoming state election independently.
Responding to this, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Bingkor deputy chief Rafie Robert issued a firm statement urging any party dissatisfied with the coalition’s direction to leave.
“GRS was not formed to accommodate personal agendas or internal sabotage. If any party or individual is uncomfortable with the coalition’s path, they are free to exit,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 30).
Rafie reminded that Usno failed to win any seats in the 2020 state election, with most candidates, including Pandikar, losing their deposits. Nevertheless, he noted that the party was still entrusted with roles in government, reflecting Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor’s inclusive leadership.
“Now, as elections near, those who were silent are resurfacing with threats and demands. Where were they these past four years?” he asked, adding that those who benefit from government positions but re-emerge only during election season are not acting in good faith.
He further cautioned against internal disruption, stressing that Sabah’s political instability has often been fuelled by individuals prioritising personal gain over public service.
“True leadership is tested during hardship. Sabah’s youth are weary of politicians who vanish when there is real work to be done,” he said.
Sabah Star Bingkor Wiramuda chief Florian Ilon supported Rafie’s stance, urging coalition members to place unity and stability above individual ambition.
“This coalition was built through collective effort. It must not be undermined from within,” he said.
Pandikar had reiterated his party’s concerns during Usno’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri event in Sandakan, claiming Usno had been sidelined and may have no choice but to contest alone.
