IPOH: The frequent heavy rains have affected the production of spring onions and eggplants in Cameron Highlands, causing shortages and price hikes.
“There is a 50% reduction in the production of both these vegetables,” said Cameron Highlands Agriculture Entrepreneurs Association chairman Cheng Nam Hong.
“The farm prices for spring onions at the moment are between RM8 and RM10 per kilo. When it reaches the markets, it is probably sold for RM15 or more.
“For eggplants, the farm price is between RM4 and RM5 per kilo, while the market price is about RM8 now,” he said.
Due to the persistent heavy rains, especially in the evenings, he said the amount of rainfall is impacting these two crops.
The weather has been unpredictable since the month began.
Cheng said that both vegetables are mainly planted outdoors.
Spring onions in particular are known for their delicate roots, making the plant vulnerable.
“When it rains, excessive moisture in the soil causes root rot and yellowing leaves, making it difficult for the plants to mature properly,” he noted.
Cheng said eggplant growers are struggling amid the constant rain, which caused fungal infections, leading to a lower yield.
“However, production of other leafy vegetables, tomatoes and cabbage are not affected as these are mainly planted in greenhouses. So, the impact from the weather has been minimal.”
