Well-functioning police force vital for national stability, says Lam Thye

PETALING JAYA: The police play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety and upholding justice, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

"As such a well-functioning police force is essential for national stability, economic growth and public trust in governance.

He said it is encouraging to see Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail welcoming public input to improve the police force.

Lee, who is Alliance for a Safe Community chairman, offered several suggestions to improve the police force, among which included community policing and public engagement.

"The police as a way to combat corruption and improve integrity should intensify efforts to ensure police personnel embrace noble values to combat corruption and promote integrity," said Lee in a statement on Tuesday (April 29).

"Welfare and working conditions should be improved by addressing overwork (issues) and hiring more personnel in certain key departments.

Lee said increasing visible patrols in high-crime areas should be conducted as part of crime prevention.

He also called for fair and professional investigations for all crime cases without bias or political influence.

"By implementing these reforms, the police can become a more efficient, trusted and professional institution as public cooperation and government support are key to ensuring a safer and more just Malaysia," added Lee.
