Early voting exceeds 90%

TAPAH: More than 92.8% of early voters cast their ballots in the Ayer Kuning by-election, said the Election Commission (EC).

Voting was done at two centres, the Dewan Rekreasi Pegawai Kanan, of the 3rd Battalion of the General Operations Force (PGA) in Bidor, and the Anggerik Hall of the Tapah police headquarters housing complex.

The EC said some 500 police personnel and their spouses were eligible to vote.

Polling day for the Ayer Kuning by-election is this Saturday.

The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin in February.

There will be a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional’s Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said two police personnel who were listed as early voters had passed away, but the electoral roll still had them registered.

“One of them was registered at the Tapah district police headquarters, while the other was with the 3rd Battalion of the General Operations Force in Bidor. One of the deaths was the result of a road accident that occurred last week,” he said.

On a related matter, Noor Hisam said only two investigations have been opened so far in the Ayer Kuning by-election.

Noor Hisam added that police had received a total of seven reports since nomination day on April 12.

However, five of those reports were classified as “No Offence Disclosed”, while two others are being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.
