Construction of temporary access road underway following Kiulu landslide

KOTA KINABALU: Construction of a temporary access road has begun following a landslide that severed the primary route connecting Tamparuli and Kiulu, providing much-needed relief to affected residents and road users.

The Tuaran Public Works Department (JKR) confirmed that construction commenced immediately after the incident, which was triggered by continuous heavy rainfall.

The collapse of the existing temporary access at KM2.45 of the Tamparuli-Kiulu Road had earlier forced the full closure of the route to facilitate urgent repairs.

Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who visited the site on Wednesday morning (April 23), urged JKR to act swiftly to restore connectivity for the community.

"I understand the difficulties faced by Kiulu residents following the road closure, and I hope the new temporary access can be completed as soon as possible for the convenience of those travelling for work and for students who need to get to school," he said in a statement.

Bangkuai, who is also the Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister, expressed concern about the potential impact on Kiulu’s eco-tourism sector, a key economic driver for the area.

"This road is crucial for tourists visiting Kiulu’s eco-tourism destinations. We do not want tourism activities to be disrupted," he stressed.

He added that JKR and onsite contractors assured him they are working diligently to expedite the construction of the new access road.

Bangkuai highlighted the importance of regular meetings with the JKR director and district engineer to ensure proper follow-up action on various road damage issues along Kiulu’s main route.

"While I understand that JKR is facing similar challenges elsewhere, I hope a solution can be found quickly to safeguard the safety and smooth travel of Kiulu residents," he said.

A representative from the Tuaran District Office was present during the site visit to oversee the situation.

Bangkuai stressed that he will continue to closely monitor the progress of the repair works and ensure that all relevant parties fulfill their responsibilities.

He also called for more frequent monitoring along Kiulu’s main roads to detect early signs of landslides and implement prompt preventive measures.

In the meantime, he advised residents to exercise caution when using alternative routes, which include Jalan KK-Kudat, Jalan Stesen TV Lawamandau, Jalan Bungoliu Logkou Timbok, Jalan Kiulu Logkou Lama, and Jalan Kiulu Lawamandau to reach Pekan Kiulu.
