Bus intercepted, driver punched after minor accident with lorry near Gerik

IPOH: A bus driver was injured following an altercation after an accident involving his vehicle and a lorry at KM28.8 of the East-West Highway near Gerik recently.

Gerik OCPD Supt Abdul Samad Othman said the incident occurred at about 1.30pm on Tuesday (March 31) when the bus travelling from Lumut to Terengganu, carrying 20 passengers and driven by a 22-year-old man, collided with a lorry driven by a 38-year-old man while navigating a bend.

He said the collision caused damage to the bus’s side mirror and the lorry’s right window.

"The bus driver continued his journey as the location was deemed unsuitable for stopping.

"Following the incident, a 49-year-old lorry driver who witnessed the accident contacted another lorry driver to help intercept the bus.

"The bus was later stopped about 6km further on, towards the Titiwangsa Gerik-Jeli rest area," he said in a statement on Thursday (April 2).

Supt Samad said that after the bus was stopped, an altercation ensued and a second bus driver, aged 32, was allegedly punched on the right cheek by the 49-year-old lorry driver.

He was subsequently treated at Hospital Gerik and discharged.

"The case is being investigated under Rule 10 LN 166/59 and Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

"The public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified videos on social media, as this could mislead the public and disrupt investigations," Supt Samad said.
