Ayer Kuning polls: Political fatwas misleading, says Mujahid

PETALING JAYA: Political fatwas such as those issued by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang are are misleading and confusing and need addressing as they contradict Islamic law and the welfare of the ummah, says Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa

The Amanah deputy president said that he believes Abdul Hadi's statement asking for the postponement of haj and umrah to support the Islamic cause clearly refers to voters in the Ayer Kuning by-election.

"Abdul Hadi describes the victory of the PAS candidate as a victory for Islam, whereas this democratic contest is about choosing which party is better able to serve the people, not a battle between Islam and anti-Islam.

“He is simply riding on the issue of haj and umrah pilgrimages to get people to go out and vote,” he said in a TikTok video.

During a campaign event for the Perikatan candidate for the Ayer Kuning by-election in Tanjung Keramat, Perak, the Marang MP said Muslims are obliged to appoint fellow Muslims to lead a country, adding that it is a huge responsibility in Islam to choose a leader who follows the Islamic faith.

“Our people, however, chose to perform umrah first, with politics second,” he said during his speech at Kampung Tanjung Keramat while canvassing support for Perikatan candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek.

Abdul Hadi said Prophet Muhammad had to forgo the umrah or perform the haj before the Treaty of Hudaibiyah.

The Ayer Kuning seat faces a three-cornered fight among Mohamad Yusri, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan, and PSM secretary-general KS Bawani.

Polling is set for April 26, with early voting on April 22.
