PETALING JAYA: Lembah Pantai MP Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called for immediate strict action after an incident involving an inaccurately displayed Jalur Gemilang at a Kuala Lumpur shopping centre went viral.
Fahmi said the incident occurred when a booth at a baby product exhibition showcased the Jalur Gemilang without its crucial crescent moon, which represents Islam as Malaysia's official religion.
He added that viral recordings and photos of the incident have led to at least five police reports lodged by members of his party in the Lembah Pantai constituency.
Fahmi urged the Royal Malaysia Police to launch immediate investigations to clarify any ongoing rumours.
“I will leave it up to the police to investigate this, but I must advocate that stern action be taken against the guilty party once found, as the Jalur Gemilang is the pride of all of us and a symbol of our sovereignty,” said Fahmi.
He added that the police must find out who is responsible and establish the facts as soon as possible.
“Those responsible cannot be allowed to simply apologise for this mistake, as they should have known beforehand that such an error will not be tolerated here,” he said after an event on Sunday (April 20).
Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, added that the incident would be investigated under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, which regulates the unauthorised use of emblems and names, particularly for commercial and professional purposes.
He also said it would be investigated under the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949, which oversees how national emblems, such as flags and banners, can be displayed.
“I hope this incident serves as a reminder for everyone and event organisers that proper protocols for the usage of the Jalur Gemilang must be adhered to, and failing to follow these rules is a crime,” he added.
