Customs foils drug smuggling attempt

KUALA LUMPUR: A Thai woman’s attempt at smuggling in 5.22kg of cocaine was thwarted by alert Customs personnel at the KL International Airport.

The woman, 30, had disembarked at Terminal 1 of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on March 18 when her bag was checked.

“We found the substance hidden in a secret compartment in the bag. The woman was then detained,” Customs Department (Central Zone) acting assistant director-general Dr Ahmad Taufik Sulaiman said yesterday.

He said the drugs, worth RM1.05mil, was believed to be for distribution in the country and could supply up to 80,000 users.

Ahmad Taufik said hiding drugs in secret compartments was the usual tactic used by drug syndicates.

He urged anyone with information about smuggling of contraband to contact the Customs toll free hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs office.
