Manhunt underway for drug suspect who hurt two cops in knife attack

IPOH: Two policemen were injured after a suspect attacked them with a knife while they were attempting to arrest him at Kampung Sungai Jernih, Ijok, in Selama.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the incident occurred at about noon on Tuesday (June 23) after the Selama district police headquarters received information about a man, believed to be a drug addict, staying in a hut beside an unnumbered house in the village.

He said a team from the district’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division conducted surveillance at the location before moving in to arrest the suspect.

"During the arrest attempt, the suspect became aggressive and attacked the two personnel using a sharp weapon believed to be a knife before fleeing the scene," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 24).

He said the attack left a 44-year-old sarjan and a 27-year-old konstabel injured following a struggle with the suspect.

Both officers received treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

Comm Alwi said police have since launched an extensive operation to track down and arrest the suspect, including setting up roadblocks on routes leading into and out of the area.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, he added.

"I urge members of the public not to speculate on the incident and to provide any information that could assist investigations by contacting the Selama district police operations room at 05-8395999 or the nearest police station," he added.
