Ayer Kuning polls: Perikatan candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek remembers Chinese roots

TAPAH: I look a bit like Chinese, but I cannot speak the language, says Abd Muhaimin Malek.

In his bid to endear himself to the Chinese community, the Ayer Kuning by-election candidate from Perikatan Nasional revealed that his mother was Chinese.

"My mother was born Chinese but raised by a Malay.

"So since she was young, she also can’t speak Chinese," he said in his speech during a walkabout in Ayer Kuning town on Friday (April 18).

"My blood is 80% Chinese and 20% Minangkabau," he added.

Abd Muhaimin said, regardless of one’s race, he would raise issues affecting the local people to the state assembly if needed.

“I will be your voice, to express grievances or raise any issues and for action to be taken.

"It is my and Perikatan's commitment to be the voice of the people," he said.

"It is our principle to have a stable economy and to care for the people of all races," he added.

The Ayer Kuning by-election was called after its incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin passed away in February.

Polls are set on April 26, while early voting is on April 22.

Abd Muhaimin faces Barisan Nasional's Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia for the state seat.

In the 2022 General Election, Ishsam polled 9,088 votes and won by a 2,213 majority, defeating Amanah's Mohd Nazri Hashim, Muhammad Noor Farid of PAS, Pejuang's Maziah Salim and Bawani.
