Bukit Aman probing alleged insult of King on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman is investigating an alleged insult by a Facebook user towards His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, in conjunction with the visit of Chinese President Xi Jin Ping.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said a police report was lodged on the matter by a 47-year-old man in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak at about 11.18am on Thursday (April 17).

"We are investigating under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1949 and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998," he said when contacted on Thursday.

Initial investigations revealed that the Facebook user had also lodged a report, claiming the Facebook account used to post the insult was a fake one, the IGP said.

"He suspects someone else had used his profile picture and user name to set up the fake account," he added.

Razarudin said the police will investigate further once an analysis report from the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is obtained.

Previously, several netizens and public figures urged the police to investigate the alleged insult and called for stiffer penalties against those who committed offences related to Royalty, Religion and Race (3R).
