Sibu housewife loses over RM100,000 in online car sale scam


SIBU: A housewife has lost RM108,040 after falling victim to an online vehicle sales scam.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim, a local woman in her 30s, lodged a police report on Tuesday (April 15) regarding the incident.

"Her ordeal began on March 26 when she came across an online advertisement offering a Toyota Hilux Vigo for sale at RM29,600.

"Enticed by the offer, she contacted the suspect through WhatsApp," he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 16).

ACP Zulkipli said the suspect instructed the woman to make multiple payments to cover the down payment, court fees, and taxes.

"The victim complied and made 32 transactions to 10 different local bank accounts between March 27 and early April, amounting to RM108,040.

"Once the payments were made, the suspect began giving a series of excuses regarding the delivery of the vehicle," he said.

Growing suspicious, the woman eventually realised she had been scammed and proceeded to file a police report.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
