Sabah govt to probe claims of PPR houses rented out by ineligible occupants

KOTA KINABALU: A thorough and comprehensive investigation will be carried out by the Local Government and Housing Ministry into allegations that People's Housing Project (PPR) units were being rented out to ineligible individuals.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the investigation would be carried out transparently after the issue was raised by opposition assemblymen - Arunarnsin Taib (Warisan- Gum Gum) and Datuk Jaujan Sambakong (Warisan -Sulabayan) at the Sabah Legislative Assembly Question Hour, Wednesday (April 16).

The two opposition assemblymen raised their concerns that many deserving people were unable to get a PPR unit because some of the existing tenants had moved out but rented the units to others.

The situation they claimed was unfair to the people who are still waiting for placement in the PPR units.

Answering an earlier question, Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister I, Datuk Isnin Aliasnih, said the ministry, through the local authorities, was constantly monitoring all PPR projects.

He said they were constantly looking at cases of sub-letting or re-renting of units, using PPR as transit houses that do not comply with the conditions, as well as going after occupants whose rent was in arrears of over three months.

Answering the original question, Isnin said the Taman Murni PPR housing scheme and the Sandakan Municipal Council, have carried out enforcement actions and identified eight vacant units.

At the Taman Batu Putih PPR, he said that authorities carried out checks twice in 2024, but found none of the units vacant at the Taman Gum-Gum Jaya PPR.
