Gang in kidnap case caught

Day in court: The six suspects being taken to court in Seremban. They were remanded on Monday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three men and three women, including the mastermind, have been detained in connection with the kidnapping of a teenage girl in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

It is learnt that a 31-year-old woman, who is among those detained, was behind the kidnapping and the subsequent demand for a RM2mil ransom.

A suspect who was killed in a police shootout in Klang, Selangor, on Monday was also part of the gang.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the 16-year-old girl and her mother had gone to a beauty salon on April 10.

“Not long after that, the victim wanted to go to a nearby supermarket, and while on the way there, she was kidnapped by a man who shoved her into a four-wheel drive vehicle.

“In the vehicle, the victim was tied up and stuffed into a luggage bag,” he told a press conference at the CID headquarters yesterday.

The victim’s family then received a RM2mil ransom demand.

“After negotiating with the kidnappers, the family paid RM280,000 along with several gold necklaces. The victim was released the next day in Port Dickson,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the kidnappers were meticulous – they even scanned the bag containing the ransom money using a metal detector to check for trackers.

Two special CID teams assigned to the case managed to track down the mastermind and the other five members.

“We recovered RM180,000 of the ransom money.

“The kidnapping gang had spent RM100,000 before they were caught,” said Comm Mohd Shuhaily.

“The six suspects have been remanded for 14 days.”

Investigations revealed that the gang members distanced themselves from each other after the girl was released.

It was reported that the suspect who was shot dead had rammed his vehicle against two police cars before firing several shots at them.

The police were forced to return fire near Bukit Tinggi, Klang.
