Pak Lah a 'statesman who remained grounded', says Fahmi in paying tribute to late former PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil (pic) has paid tribute to the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, describing the former prime minister as a grounded statesman whose legacy should be honoured and remembered by future generations.

Speaking on behalf of the Cabinet, Fahmi extended his condolences to Abdullah’s family.

“On behalf of the Cabinet, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Tun Abdullah Badawi,” he said.

Fahmi also revealed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had formally conveyed his condolences during a Cabinet meeting and informed ministers that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented for the former prime minister’s remains to be laid to rest at the Makam Pahlawan.

Fahmi also expressed gratitude to various organisations that chose to postpone or cancel scheduled events as a mark of respect for Abdullah’s passing.

Fahmi said Abdullah was “a statesman who remained grounded” throughout his life and career.

He added that the Communications Ministry would take steps to document Abdullah’s contributions for public record and reflection.

“I will instruct the ministry to prepare a profile and a short documentary highlighting Abdullah’s accomplishments during his administration, so that the younger generation can appreciate his legacy,” he said.

Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who served as Malaysia’s fifth prime minister from 2003 to 2009, passed away on Monday (April 14) evening.

He will be buried with full state honours at the Makam Pahlawan, Masjid Negara on Tuesday (April 15).
