Penang to hold roundtable on impact of US tariff

BUTTERWORTH: A roundtable session involving industry players, academics and state leaders in Penang will be held to discuss the new US tariff.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the session on Friday (April 11) is important, as Penang's position as the country's main export contributor might be affected by the 24% tariff.

The state's export value was recorded at RM9.3bil in February.

“The state government has taken proactive measures in addressing the situation (by organising the roundtable discussion)," he said at Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak's Hari Raya Open House here on Thursday (April 10).

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced a baseline tariff of 10% to be imposed on all countries, with higher duties on some nations, including Malaysia at 24%.

On Thursday (April 10), Trump was reportedly announced a 90-day postponement of the higher tariff increase to allow room for trade negotiations with the country’s trading partners.
