Construction worker sleepwalks 126m up crane tower

KOTA KINABALU: The presence of a man on top of a crane tower at a construction site in Luyang very early in the morning left onlookers concerned for his safety.

They saw the man walking along the beam of the crane at a height of around 126m and quickly alerted the Fire and Rescue Department.

The man, a construction worker believed to be in his 40s, claimed he was unaware of his action, stating he had “sleepwalked”.

He, too, was shocked to find himself more than 120m above the ground.

Penampang Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Asst Fire Officer Zeno Tinggalan said a team of eight personnel was dispatched to the scene, located three kilometres away, after receiving an emergency call at 6.57am.

In an unexpected turn, the worker, who works at the nearby construction site, descended safely on his own after nearly 30 minutes of persuasion.

He subsequently said that a mysterious “whisper” had directed him to ascend the crane.

“We arrived to find him perched at the end of the crane, atop the building under construction.

“After a tense period of calming him down, he came down safely and was handed over to the police for further investigation,” Tinggalan said.

Around 8.02am, the rescue operation concluded with the worker unharmed and no further danger identified.
