Man ‘sleepwalks’, ends up 126m above the ground

KOTA KINABALU: A construction worker’s bizarre early morning climb to a crane tower in Luyang has left many puzzled and alarmed.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, claimed he was unaware of his actions, stating he had ‘sleepwalked’ and was shocked to find himself more than 120m above the ground.

Onlookers saw the man walking along the crane's beam at a height of around 126m and quickly alerted the Fire and Rescue Services Department.

Penampang Fire and Rescue Station chief Sr Asst Fire Officer Zeno Tinggalan said eight personnel were dispatched to the scene, located three kilometres away, after receiving an emergency call at about 6:57am.

In an unexpected turn, the worker, who was employed at the construction site, safely descended on his own after nearly 30 minutes of persuasion.

He later explained that a mysterious ‘whispering’ voice had guided him to the top of the crane.

“We arrived to find him perched at the end of the crane, atop the building under construction. After a tense period of calming him, he safely came down and was handed over to the police for further investigation,” Tinggalan said.

The worker was unharmed, and after confirming no further dangers, the rescue operation was concluded around 8:02am.
