Foreigner remanded a further three days over fatal accident in Sibu

SIBU: A Chinese national has been further remanded for three days by the magistrate's court to facilitate investigation into a fatal accident that claimed the life of Sabah State Court Director Marutin Pagan on March 30.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi on Friday (April 4) also ordered that the 42-year-old suspect, who is an engineer, be present in court again on April 7 for further mention of the case.

The suspect had earlier been remanded for four days to assist with the investigation.

On March 30, two sports utility vehicles (SUVs) collided at the Kanowit roundabout on Jalan Kanowit/Julau/Durin.

Marutin sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was flung out of the vehicle driven by his 28-year-old daughter.

Marutin, 56, his wife, and their three daughters were travelling from Kanowit to Sibu after visiting his ailing father in Machan.

The late Marutin began his career as a Deputy Public Prosecutor in Kuching from March 1995 to 2001 before relocating to Kuala Lumpur as a registrar until 2006.

From 2006 onwards, he assumed the role of Sessions Court Judge in Bintulu (2007–2011), Kuching (2011), Miri (until 2016), and Samarahan (2016–2017).
