Guys may also find themselves in unwanted situations

PETALING JAYA: Content creator Shaun Liew enjoys cooking and often shares simple recipes on social media.

Since starting his account five months ago, he has gained about 22,400 followers.

But as his audience grew, so did some unwanted attention from dubious characters.

“I am surprised that some people could exhibit such bold and inappropriate behaviour,” said Liew, 31.

He voiced his hope that the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act could address the “grey areas” concerning sexual harassment in cyberspace.

“I also hope the law can protect men who may find themselves in unwanted situations and having to face inappropriate advances by both women and men,” he said when contacted.

For 31-year-old Siti (not her real name), an encounter with a flasher back in 2017 remained horrifying to her.

Recalling the incident, she said she was waiting in the car for her father who was praying at a nearby mosque.

“A man knocked on the window, requesting me to wind down my window. I wanted to ignore him but he was standing too close to the car. If I were to drive off, I would’ve dragged him.

“Eventually, I rolled down the window just about an inch. He kept mumbling and appeared to ask about a location.

“Then he tried to put his hand through the window. He then proceeded to flash at me,” she said.

Siti believes there is a lack of confidence among victims in coming forward to lodge a complaint about sexual harassment.

“Most victims worry they will not be taken seriously. So I think there should be properly trained investigative officers,” she said.

“This is to avoid concerns by victims that they would not be being taken seriously or fear that they would be ridiculed.”

She also said laws are in place but there must be enforcement.
