Thousands attend Johor MB's Hari Raya open house

JOHOR BARU: Thousands of people from all walks of life attended Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house.

The event at the Mentri Besar’s official residence in Saujana, saw an estimated 20,000 visitors enjoying the celebration.

Among the attendees was 29-year-old engineer A. Thanigai from Perak, attending such an event for the first time.

“It was my fiancé’s idea, as he is used to attending such open houses, and I am glad I agreed to come. I really enjoyed the festive atmosphere, and it is nice to see people of all races coming together for such a special event,” she said.

Meanwhile, clerk Surianizah Abd Jafar, 31, who came with her husband and two children, said this was the third time she had attended the Mentri Besar’s open house.

“My children really enjoyed it and were already asking us about it when we were on our way back to our hometown in Pontian from Kuala Lumpur.

"I started coming here when my brother became one of the vendors for the food stalls at this open house.

"Initially, I came just to accompany my brother, but I really enjoyed it and decided to continue coming every year after that,” she said.

A total of 34 stalls were set up, serving a wide variety of traditional dishes such as ketupat, rendang, laksa Johor, satay, and nasi briyani.

Onn Hafiz and his wife Datin Sharmin Fazlina Mohd Shukor mingled with the crowd and greeted guests who came from near and far to join the celebration.
