KOTA KINABALU: The balik kampung rush for Hari Raya and the school holidays has resulted in three deaths and eight injuries following two accidents in Telupid, some 200km away, over the past two days.
In the latest mishap early Sunday (March 30), two people comprising a six-month old infant and a woman were killed while five others escaped with minor injuries at around 6am.
Beluran Fire Station chief Edoen Macheal said they received a call about the accident in front of the Telupid Health Clinic at 6.28am, and a team of six firemen were sent to respond.
“Early investigations found that the victims were travelling in a sedan when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve and crash,” he said when contacted.
He said six of the victims were assisted out of the wrecked car and brought to the hospital for emergency treatment while a man who was trapped inside managed to get out after firemen arrived to extricate him.
Two of the victims - a woman and a baby boy, were pronounced dead at the hospital, said Edoen.
Operations on site ended at 8.30am, he added.
On March 28, a 46-year-old man was killed while three others, a 45-year-old woman, girl, 16, and boy, 14, sustained injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in skidded and overturned before crashing along Kg Buis Kiabau, at around 9pm.
Edoen said road users who witnessed the mishap helped three of the victims to the hospital while a trapped man was only extricated when firemen arrived.
Medical officials on scene pronounced the man dead before the body was handed over to the cops for further action.
Firemen wrapped up their operations at 11.30pm after eliminating other hazardous elements on site.
