Local expertise must be competent enough to deal with any cyber attack, says PM

PETALING JAYA: Government and industry players must cooperate to protect the country's critical infrastructure from any high-level threats, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

During the daily briefing from the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday. (March 27), Anwar's senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) and the National Security Council (NSC) were instructed to work closely over the recent cyber-attack on Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), where hackers demanded a US$10mil ransom.

"This incident shows the ability of local expertise to handle cyber security incidents, which must always be at the highest level.

"The capacity and competence of local experts must be strengthened so that dependence on foreign parties in managing the country's critical systems is minimised.

"The level of readiness of local experts to deal with any cyber security incident will continue to be a priority for the government," he said.

On March 25, Anwar said the government would not give in to criminals and was instead planning to allocate more funds to strengthen Malaysia's cyber security systems.
