KUALA LUMPUR: The relatives of a man who had borrowed money from loan sharks are now suffering from his actions after a petrol bomb was thrown into their home.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong, at a press conference on the matter on Thursday (March 27) at Wisma MCA, said that the incident occured at 2:10am on March 20.
The victim, who went by the name Leong, said that his mother was woken up by a loud explosion.
When she went out to check the cause of the noise, she found that the car porch was in flames and the victim’s car was burned.
“A warning letter was also addressed to my cousin. There were also contact numbers from the loan sharks,” he said, adding that the numbers were from Singapore.
Checks with other family members revealed that his cousin had borrowed cash amounting to SGD500 (RM1,655.09).
However, it was also learnt that his cousin had settled the debt, including interest, but the loan sharks had demanded SGD5,000 (RM16,550).
“The borrower’s parents had disappeared after being fed up with paying their son’s debt. It is possible that the victim’s house was targeted as he was the next of kin,” Chong said, adding that it was a possibility that the borrower had passed their address to the loan sharks.
A police report on the incident was lodged on March 20.
“We hope that the police will investigate this as attempted murder because someone could have been seriously hurt or worse during the attack,” he added.
