Seven scam call centre workers busted in raid on Cyberjaya condo

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven people have been detained in a raid on a condominium unit in Cyberjaya that was used as a scam call centre.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the suspects, five men and two women aged 22 to 36, were detained in the raid on Thursday (March 13).

"They are all Malaysians and were working as call centre operators.

"We seized various items including seven laptops, 11 mobile phones and a set of keys," he told reporters at CCID headquarters here on Wednesday (March 19).

Investigations found that the syndicate was running a job scam targeting victims from Hong Kong, Comm Ramli said.

"The suspects would instruct the victims to perform certain tasks before they could get a 20% return on the amount they paid during registration.

"We believe they have been operating for about a year.

"Each suspect was paid RM4,000 a month," he said.

Three of those detained had criminal records for offences including illegal gambling, drug abuse and cheating, he added.

"Once again, a condominium unit was being used as a scam call centre.

"I remind all landlords and owners of premises to 'KYC' (know your customers) before allowing them to rent the property.

"Excuses such as not knowing (about the illegal activity) cannot be accepted," he stressed.
