KOTA KINABALU: Severe riverbank erosion caused by floods is threatening tourist spots and agricultural areas in Kiulu, prompting assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai to call for urgent action.
Bangkuai has submitted a formal request to the Tuaran Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) to build protective structures in erosion-prone areas.
“The village development and security committee has raised serious concerns over increasing damage to local infrastructure, farmland and tourism sites,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 19).

His remarks followed a meeting with Tuaran DID officials to discuss the immediate need for riverbank protection and improved irrigation for padi fields and fruit farms.
He handed a list of 17 affected locations with photographs of the damage to Tuaran DID district engineer Mohd Khairul Anwar Abdul Rahman.
Bangkuai, who is also Assistant Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, said the situation was urgent and delays could have devastating consequences on villagers, farmers and tourism operators in the area.
“If not addressed quickly, the damage will worsen. I urge the authorities to act immediately to prevent further destruction and ensure the safety of affected communities,” said Bangkuai, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board.
