Driver arrested for alleged assault on motorcyclist in Melaka

MELAKA: A 25-year-old driver of a luxury multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) has been arrested for allegedly hitting a motorcyclist on the head at a traffic light junction in Kota Shahbandar here.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspect was detained in the same area at 3pm on Sunday (March 16) before being released due to health reasons.

"The suspect was detained to assist in investigations under Sections 506 and 323 of the Penal Code," he said on Monday (March 17).

ACP Christopher Patit said in the 2am incident, the suspect alighted from his MPV and suddenly hit the back of the victim’s head as he was waiting at the traffic light.

"At the time of the incident, the 24-year-old victim was waiting for the traffic light to change.

"The victim retaliated by pushing the suspect," he said.

ACP Christopher Patit said other motorists at the scene came to the victim’s aid, and the suspect then ran back into his vehicle and fled the scene.

He added that the suspect was believed to be intoxicated at the time of the incident and the motive for the attack is still under investigation.

Earlier, a 47-second video went viral on social media showing a motorcyclist being assaulted by a man.
