Man to face trial for neglecting five-year-old son

MELAKA: A man pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here to a charge of neglecting his biological child, causing the child to suffer injuries last week.

Haziq Amsyar Mohd Hamka, 25, was alleged to have committed the offence at a residential unit in Residensi PR1MA Melaka Tengah 2, Jalan Pokok Mangga 18, Taman Pokok Mangga, within the Melaka Tengah district at 5.30pm last Thursday (April 9).

According to the charge, Haziq Amsyar, as a person having care of a five-year-old boy at the time, had neglected or exposed the victim in a manner likely to cause physical and emotional injury.

He was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Rif'ah Izzati Abdul Mutalif proposed bail at RM30,000 with one surety and additional conditions that the accused be prohibited from disturbing the victim, the victim's family and prosecution witnesses, and to report to a police station once a month until the case is concluded.

Defence counsel A. Mathan appealed for a lower bail on the grounds that his client worked as a shop assistant.

Judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and agreed to the additional conditions proposed by the prosecution, and fixed May 19 for document submission. - Bernama
