Delegates gather for DAP congress

SHAH ALAM: Crowds of DAP delegates are gathering at a convention centre here for the party's annual congress.

This year's event is expected to be heated, as delegates vote to select leaders for the powerful central executive committee (CEC).

70 candidates are vying for 30 positions, including most incumbent leaders.

According to the DAP's system, once results are announced, the 30 newly elected CEC members will meet to select the party's top hierarchy leaders.

The big question among party members and observers is whether current chairman Lim Guan Eng will make it into the top 30.

A party source that declined to be named said Lim will not face any problems getting in.

"There are many who are still very loyal to Guan Eng and the Lims. He will definitely make it, but the question is, how many votes will he get,” said a party source.

The source added that the next question is whether Lim can remain as party chairman.

"There are some in the party who want deputy chairman Gobind Singh to move up as chairman, and others who want vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming or Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to helm the position," said the source.

He added that most of the party's new generation of members and leaders want to move away from the dynastic leadership identity synonymous with the DAP.

Meanwhile, Lim told journalists he is leaving it to party members to decide whom they want to select as their leaders.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to attend the event later in the morning.
