Anwar launches Wakaf Mara Madani, pledges personal donation

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has launched the Wakaf Mara Madani, aimed at helping the Malay community, with both him and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pledging to donate RM1,000 each.

In his speech, Anwar stated that the wakaf institution was part of the Muslim legacy aimed at building strength from the grassroots and the people.

"This does not mean that we will reduce government allocation for such purposes.

"This is the pledge made by Zahid and me. We will not reduce it.

"Both of us agreed to donate RM1,000 each to the Wakaf Mara Madani," he said during the event in conjunction with the 59th Mara Day celebration on Saturday (March 15).

A wakaf is a Muslim voluntary charitable contribution made to support people and organisations in need.

He urged those attending the event to donate as much as possible to the initiative.

According to a statement from Mara, the main objective of the establishment of Wakaf Mara Madani is to serve as a catalyst in creating a Bumiputra society with socio-economic well-being through sustainable wakaf instruments.
