GOF seizes e-waste worth RM100mil in Penang, arrests three

IPOH: The General Operations Force (GOF) arrested three individuals, including two Myanmar nationals, at a factory in Simpang Ampat, Penang, for allegedly conducting electronic waste (e-waste) recycling activities without a permit.

Ulu Kinta GOF Northern Brigade Commander SAC Shahrum Hashim said the inspection, conducted last Wednesday, revealed that the factory had been operating without any licence or approval from the Department of Environment (DOE).

The factory also employed two foreign workers, including a woman, both without valid documents, he said in a statement on Saturday (March 8).

During the inspection, the GOF team seized e-waste valued at RM60.5mil and several other items, including machinery, worth a total of RM106.7mil.

The case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 18(1) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, he said.

Meanwhile, Shahrum said his team also raided a plastics factory in Sungkai near Tanjung Malim last Wednesday and arrested 19 foreigners, with a total seizure valued at RM10.7mil. – Bernama
