THE rate of zakat fitrah (personal tithe) will be reviewed by the Kedah Mufti Department in the future following the issue of imported white rice being mixed with locally produced white rice, Berita Harian reported.
Kedah Mufti Datuk Fadzil Awang said the mixing of imported and local rice has been practised for some time but no in-depth study was conducted on this issue.
“The first step is to determine the mixing ratio, whether local rice is more predominant than imported rice, or vice versa. We still do not have a complete picture,” he added.
Fadzil, who is state fatwa committee chairman, said the authorities will monitor developments at the federal level, particularly on the steps taken to examine the process of mixing local and imported rice.
On Feb 28, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said the rate of the zakat fitrah is based on rice grades and it has been decided by the fatwa committee and the Islamic religious council of the respective states.
Zakat fitrah for states in Peninsular Malaysia is according to the local price of Bernas Super Tempatan Grade A rice, equivalent to 2.60kg.
For states in Sabah and Sarawak, it is 2.70kg
