Two DBKL officers injured in altercation with unlicensed hawkers

KUALA LUMPUR: Two police reports have been lodged against illegal traders who injured Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officers during enforcement actions along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR) and Jalan Benteng.

The individuals responsible for injuring DBKL enforcement officers have been handed over to the police.

According to a DBKL statement, two officers were injured by illegal traders in separate incidents while monitoring the Ramadan and Aidilfitri Bazaars.

"DBKL views this incident seriously and will not compromise on any aggressive actions against officers fulfilling their duties in the public interest.

The officers issue warnings and notices to those found violating regulations before any action is taken.

Enforcement is only carried out when individuals disregard the warnings and continue to operate illegally.

"However, some individuals have resorted to extreme provocation against DBKL officers," the statement said.

The statement also emphasized that DBKL provides fair opportunities for all interested parties meeting the stipulated requirements to trade at the Ramadan and Aidilfitri Bazaars.

"Affordable rental rates have been provided to enable traders to obtain legitimate licenses to operate at the bazaar.

"This measure ensures traders operate legally while providing opportunities for more small entrepreneurs to conduct their businesses in a safe and orderly environment.

"Therefore, enforcement action is crucial to protecting the rights of traders," the statement said.

DBKL prioritizes the well-being of city residents, considering aspects of safety and comfort for all parties.

"The presence of traders in unauthorized locations can cause traffic congestion, obstruct pedestrian pathways, and raise issues concerning waste management and food hygiene.

"As such, DBKL consistently strives to balance the interests of traders with the well-being of city residents," the statement said.

The statement also urges all parties to respect the law and cooperate with authorities to maintain Kuala Lumpur as an orderly, clean, and safe city for all.
