Sarawak customs foils attempt to smuggle cannabis in chocolate wrappers

SIBU: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department Sarawak has intercepted an attempt to smuggle 5,280g of cannabis, valued at RM158,340, hidden inside chocolate wrappers.

State Customs Director Norizan Yahya stated that the breakthrough occurred after a team of Customs Officers from the Narcotics Branch, working in collaboration with the Land Operations Unit of the Sarawak Customs Department Enforcement Division, apprehended a man collecting a parcel at a courier company on Jalan Lee Ling, Kuching, at 11am on Jan 22.

“The team inspected the parcel and discovered 25 packets of cannabis wrapped in chocolate wrappers.

“The modus operandi involved trafficking narcotics via courier services from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak by air, falsely declaring the goods as ‘merchandise’ to evade detection by the authorities,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 5)

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Norizan also urged the public to assist the Customs Department in combating smuggling crimes and advised against involvement in such activities.

The public could help by providing information on smuggling activities via the Customs Toll-Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting the nearest Customs Office in any state, ensuring that all informants’ identities will be kept confidential.
