Foreigner nabbed in Tawau using MyKad lost in Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: A foreign national man, who has been carrying someone else's MyKad in his wallet, was caught during a routine check in Tawau on Tuesday (March 4).

The man, in his 20s, had been walking around undetected with someone else’s MyKad reported lost here until he was stopped by Tawau police.

He was approached by the officers during a crime prevention patrol at 2.45pm on Mile 5, Apas Road.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin confirmed the arrest, revealing that when the suspect was asked to present identification, he handed over a MyKad.

"Upon questioning, the man admitted that the MyKad he was carrying was not his own, explaining he was using it to avoid being flagged as a foreigner," Jasmin said in a statement on Wednesday (March 5).

Further checks through the integrated police reporting system revealed that the MyKad had been reported lost in Kota Kinabalu, confirming the man's fraudulent use of the document.

The suspect was swiftly arrested and brought to the Tawau District Police Headquarters for further investigation under Regulation 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, if convicted.

"We will take strong action against anyone attempting to use false or someone else’s documents for illegal purposes," said Jasmin.
