KUALA LUMPUR: An e-hailing driver pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here Monday (Aug 24) to attempting to murder a woman by setting her on fire using petrol, causing her serious injuries earlier this month.
Ang Kam Tong, 59, entered the plea after the charge was read to him.
He was accused of committing the act against lottery outlet employee Gan Siew Teen, 62, at a premises in Taman Pusat Kepong, Sentul here at 7.51am on Aug 9.
The charge was framed under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shakila Mohd Shariff did not offer bail, on grounds that the offence was serious and non-bailable, and that the accused had allegedly tried to flee previously.
However, lawyer Lee Keng Fatt, representing the man, applied for bail on the grounds that his client worked as an e-hailing driver with an irregular income.
“My client is unmarried and has siblings. Therefore, we seek for bail to be allowed,” he said.
Judge Surita Budin allowed Ang bail of RM15,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 25 for mention for the submission of documents.
The media previously reported that an elderly woman suffered burns to about 50% of her body after being splashed with a liquid believed to be petrol and set on fire at her workplace. — Bernama
