Govt plans to allow 63 nations, long-term visit pass holders quicker immigration check
TRAVELLERS from 63 countries and those holding the long-term visit pass might be allowed to use the quick response (QR) code system for immigration clearance at Malaysia’s borders beginning Jan 1 next year, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the government is planning to expand the use of the Immigration Department’s QR code system to these travellers.
At present, the system is only used by Malaysians at immigration borders, he noted.
“But our passport autogate has allowed travellers from the 63 countries and Asean countries, including those with long-term visit passes, to use it,” he said during Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat.
The QR code clearance system currently can be used by Malaysians via the MyBorderPass app.
Saifuddin Nasution also said that presently, about 172 Immigration Department officers are stationed at immigration counters.
“But when it (the QR Code system) is fully installed, there will only be 68 officers.
“We will have a labour reduction of nearly 60%,” he said.
He also said the Malaysian passport is among the top 10 most trusted passports in the world.
Meanwhile, he said that travellers can use the MyBorderPass app to check their travelling status from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and National Higher Education Fund Corp (PTPTN).
“They can check if they have existing police or LHDN reports against them,” he added.
