Govt should expedite introduction of Ombudsman Bill, says Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should expedite introducing the Ombudsman Bill in Parliament, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic).

The member of the Malaysian Integrity Institute said that as Parliament remains in session, it is hoped that the government will present this bill for discussion among MPs.

"Establishing an Ombudsman system is a critical step toward strengthening governance, enhancing transparency, and ensuring accountability in our public administration.

"It is a mechanism that will empower citizens, protect their rights, and foster trust between the government and the people," he said when contacted on Tuesday (March 4).

The Ombudsman system has various benefits, including ensuring accountability in public administration, he said.

"The Ombudsman serves as an independent body to investigate complaints against government agencies, public officials, and administrative practices.

"In a democracy, it is essential to ensure that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions. An Ombudsman will act as a watchdog, ensuring that maladministration, inefficiency, and abuse of power are addressed promptly and fairly," he said.

Lee said the Ombudsman would also provide an accessible and impartial avenue for citizens to seek redress, ensuring that their grievances are heard and resolved without fear of retaliation.

"Trust in government institutions is the cornerstone of a functioning democracy. By introducing an Ombudsman, we demonstrate our commitment to good governance and our willingness to address the people's concerns.

"This will strengthen public confidence in our institutions and promote a culture of integrity and responsiveness," he said.

Lee said the Ombudsman will address individual complaints and identify systemic issues within public administration.

"By recommending reforms and improvements, the Ombudsman will play a proactive role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of government services.

"Many countries around the world, including our neighbours in Southeast Asia, have successfully implemented Ombudsman systems.

"These systems have proven to be effective in addressing administrative injustices and promoting transparency. By establishing an Ombudsman, Malaysia will align itself with global standards of governance and human rights protection," he said.

Lee said that the introduction of an Ombudsman Bill in Malaysia is not just a legislative necessity; it is a moral imperative.

"It is a step toward building a more just, transparent, and accountable society. I urge MPs to support this initiative and work together to make the Ombudsman system a reality for the benefit of all Malaysians.

"Let us seize this opportunity to strengthen our democracy, protect the rights of our citizens, and build a brighter future for our nation," he said.
