Anwar backs Rafizi for PKR Deputy President, supports smooth path

SHAH ALAM: The prospects of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli retaining his position as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Deputy President are brightening, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim endorsing his continuation in the upcoming party elections.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, Anwar said that he entrusted Rafizi with the role and emphasized the need for a smooth path for him to carry out his duties and responsibilities.

"I want to mandate... let Rafizi be given an easy path," he said at the Selangor 2025 Annual General Meeting (MATC) launch on Friday (Feb 28).

Previously, there was discussion about the possibility of not contesting the positions of PKR President and Deputy President.

International Bureau Chairman Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin suggested that both positions should not be contested to ensure internal party stability and smooth service delivery to the public ahead of the upcoming general election.

The proposal received support from national leaders, such as PKR Perak, who expressed backing for the non-contestation to maintain party and government stability.

However, some opinions emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic practices within the party.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim praised Anwar's openness in not preventing contests for the top positions, stating that this step nurtures democratic practices within the party.

Meanwhile, Anwar stated that he leaves the decision on whether the President and Deputy President positions will be contested to the party's leadership and stressed he does not wish to interfere in this matter, respecting the democratic process within PKR.
