Drug lab in Kulim busted, four suspects arrested


GEORGE TOWN: Police have busted a drug processing laboratory following the arrest of four individuals, including a woman, and seized drugs worth RM105,600.

Penang acting police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the suspects aged between 24 to 37 were detained at several locations in George Town and Kulim by a team of Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) officers and personnel from state police headquarters in an operation on Monday (Feb 24).

"In the first raid, police detained a man at a roadside and confiscated drugs believed to be heroin weighing about 4,500g in 10 packets worth RM43,200," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 26).

Following the arrest, police raided a car wash in Bayan Lepas and found 15 packets of drugs believed to be heroin weighing about 6,500g, with an estimated worth of RM62,400.

From intelligence gathered, police arrested three individuals including a woman in several locations in Kulim, and seized several drug processing equipment in one of the premises at Kulim.

"We believe that the syndicate has been active since the middle of last year," he said.

Comm Mohd Alwi said urine tests on one of the suspects found that the person is positive for drugs, while another two suspects have records for crime and drug-related offences.

He said police also seized two cars and two motorcycles worth about RM213,000.

He said the suspects were remanded for seven days from Feb 25 to Mac 3 for investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable by death upon conviction.
