KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 3,316 housemen were appointed and placed at graduate training hospitals nationwide last year, the Health Minister says.

Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that his ministry aims to appoint approximately 3,000 graduate medical officers this year, distributed across 49 graduate training hospitals.

“In the first quarter of 2025, the Health Ministry has appointed 1,114 medical officers Grade UD9 to undergo graduate training in these facilities,” he said during the Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Feb 19).

The health facilities include three hospital universities, 14 state hospitals, 26 major specialist hospitals and five minor specialist hospitals.

He was responding to a question by V. Ganabatirau (PH-Klang) who had asked the ministry to state the total number of housemen who have been hired and the number of those still waiting for placement.

Dzulkefly also emphasised the reduction in waiting times for appointments, saying that appointments for housemanship are now conducted six times a year, every two months, a significant improvement from the previous waiting period of over a year.
