MELAKA: A driver of a five-tonne lorry recklessly evaded enforcement officers from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and crashed into a residence in Taman Krubong Jaya here, causing significant damage.
The incident, which occurred around 5.30pm on Wednesday (Feb 19), began on the Lebuh Sungai Udang – Paya Rumput – Ayer Keroh (SPA) highway and went viral on social media.
Melaka JPJ Director Muhammad Firdaus Shariff said that his enforcement team pursued the construction material-laden lorry for approximately one hour over a 25km stretch before the driver leapt out of the moving vehicle.
"The unmanned lorry then swerved dangerously into a house on Jalan KJ51, Taman Krubong Jaya, damaging its fence, exterior wall and a parked four-wheel-drive vehicle," he said on Wedesday.
Muhammad Firdaus said the 27-year-old driver was apprehended by residents and handed over to police for further investigation.
“Checks revealed the lorry had eight prior traffic summonses, all of which had been settled.
“However, following this latest incident, JPJ issued five new summons notices to the driver for offences including operating without a Competent Driving Licence (CDL) and Goods Driving Licence (GDL), ignoring a red traffic light and reckless driving," he said.
He added that a police report had been lodged at the Durian Tunggal police station.
Meanwhile, Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah said police had received the report from a JPJ official. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant in carrying out his duties.
Meanwhile, the affected resident, Arif Izuddin Nor Azhar, 21, said he was painting the front of his house when the lorry crashed into his home.
