SEPANG: Police here arrested a married couple that own a roasted corn stall in Kota Warisan, Sepang on Monday (Feb 17).
Sepang Deputy OCPD Supt G K Shan Gopal said the man, in his 60s, was released on police bail while his Indonesian wife is in her 50s and was remanded under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
He said the woman was found to have overstayed her visa.
"Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive of the incident.
"We have recorded statements from seven witnesses to assist in the investigation," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Tuesday (Feb 18).
The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Earlier, the roasted corn seller sparked controversy after displaying a racially charged sign and apologised to the Malaysian community, especially the Indian community, for actions that could harm harmony.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said in a post on X that the trader also promised not to repeat the act in the future.
Sinar Harian also reported a statement from PKR vice President Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who said that labelling a race with derogatory terms is unacceptable and against the nation's principles of harmony.
According to Nik Nazmi, such incidents do not represent an entire race but involve a few individuals with extreme and racist attitudes.
