KOTA KINABALU: A 65-year-old man has been jailed for 30 days and fined RM10,000, or an additional three months in jail if unpaid, for drunk driving and causing an accident in Tawau district last July.
Lim Shui Sang pleaded guilty to the charges before Tawau Magistrates Court judge Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin on Monday (Feb 17).
According to the charge sheet, Lim caused an accident near Simpang Lorong Delima in Tawau at about 7.30pm on July 21, 2024.
He crashed into a motorcyclist, injuring the rider.
Investigations revealed he was driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level of 167 milligrams per 100 millilitres, exceeding the legal limit.
Lim was charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving while intoxicated beyond the legal limit.
He faced a potential jail term of up to two years and a fine of up to RM30,000 upon conviction.
The case was prosecuted by Asst Supt Joan Lee, while Lim was represented by counsel Jhesseny P. Kang.
Lee requested a severe jail sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused and deter other road users.
The Magistrate ordered Lim to serve a 30-day jail term and pay a RM10,000 fine, with an additional three months in jail if the fine is unpaid, and suspended his driver's licence for two years.
