Candidate for Malaysia’s ambassador to US pending King’s consent, says Anwar

PUCHONG: There is already a candidate for Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“As per the usual process, it will have to be consented to by the King,” he told reporters after performing Friday's prayers here (Feb 14).

The Prime Minister said consent to the appointment is expected to be received after his official visit to Bahrain next week.

This comes after Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz’s two-year term ended on Feb 8.

Earlier on Friday, former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said Malaysia’s new envoy should be a robust and deeply prepared ambassador.

The PKR vice president said this is necessary to navigate challenging international relations.

Last week, former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming proposed five names for Putrajaya’s consideration as Malaysia’s next ambassador to the US, including Nurul Izzah and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

The other candidates he proposed were former CIMB chairman Tan Sri Nazir Razak, ex-MP Yusmadi Yusoff and Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia chairman Faiz Abdullah.
