GEORGE TOWN: A motorised lift or people-mover system is set to be developed at the Waterfall Hilltop Temple on Jalan Utama to enhance accessibility.
The project will be led by Hartasuma Sdn Bhd ("Hartasuma"), the concessionaire for the Penang Hill Cable Car Development, as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
The initiative aims to assist devotees, elderly visitors, and tourists in reaching the sacred site more easily while preserving the area's natural beauty.
In a statement on Tuesday (Feb 11), Hartasuma said it would first conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to determine the most suitable technical solution for the project.
Its executive director, Tan Sri Ravindran Menon, said the company is committed to creating a positive social impact through sustainable infrastructure development.
"The Hilltop Temple Mobility Initiative is not just about transportation—it is about inclusivity, heritage preservation, and ensuring that every visitor, regardless of age or ability, can access this revered site with ease," he said.
Ravindran added that the company is proud to contribute to Penang’s development and looks forward to working closely with the state government to bring the project to life.
The announcement of the initiative coincided with the Thaipusam celebrations.
The statement also highlighted the historical significance of the Thanneermalai Shree Balathandayuthapani Devasthanam Temple, commonly known as the Waterfall Hilltop Temple.
Dating back to the 18th century, the temple sits at an altitude of over 100 metres and is one of Malaysia’s largest temples devoted to Lord Murugan.
Visitors currently need to ascend a staircase equivalent to a 20-storey climb to reach the temple, posing a significant challenge, particularly for elderly worshippers, tourists, and individuals with mobility impairments.
