Thaipusam festival begins with golden chariot procession in Penang


GEORGE TOWN: The Thaipusam festival in Penang has begun with the golden chariot procession, attracting thousands of devotees and spectators.

The procession carrying the statue of Lord Murugan marks the start of the annual Hindu festival, celebrated with deep devotion and elaborate rituals.

From as early as 4am, thousands of devotees converged at Arulmigu Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Queen Street to offer their prayers and accompany the chariot procession.

The golden chariot left the temple at Queen Street at 6.20am and will make its way to Arulmigu Sri Bala Thandayuthapani Waterfall Hilltop Temple on Jalan Kebun Bunga.

It will pass through Chulia Street, Victoria Street, Maxwell Road, Jalan Datuk Keramat, Western Road, and is expected to arrive at Jalan Kebun Bunga before midnight.

Hindus will celebrate Thaipusam on Tuesday (Feb 11) to commemorate the occasion of Lord Murugan receiving the sacred spear from his mother, Goddess Parvati, to eliminate the evil force of Soorapadman and restore prosperity and well-being to humanity.
